Ask your SASS Treasurer candidates questions about their platforms here! Voting for your SASS Treasurer will take place March 16-20! The Treasurer writes the SASS budget each year, and then keeps the Executive on track by writing cheques, depositing money at the bank, and keeping detailed records of our financial transactions. They also liaise with the MSU VP Finance, McMaster Financial Services, and CIBC.

Question for all candidates!! :)

Last September, in a General Meeting vote, SASS passed the Finance & Bursary Bylaw to set new standards for financial transparency and accountability, as well as a framework for the new SASS Bursary. If elected as Treasurer, how would you improve the implementation of this bylaw?

Concerning the SASS bursary, I would ensure that section is 8.5 of the finance bylaw is dutifully carried out this year. Any findings will be brought to the SASS executive, and if funding adjustments for the bursary are warranted then they will be considered.

Additionally, the bylaw should have clarification added as to what happens with bursary surpluses or shortfalls. Do surpluses go directly into SASS savings, or are they rolled over into the next year’s budget? Can the bursary draw upon savings if it runs out of money for the year? Answers for these questions may very well exist, but if that is the case then such answers should be readily available to all SASS members, and accessible within the bylaw with other information regarding the bursary. In the case that such answers do not exist, or are not formally written up, then they should be formulated and codified in such a way that protocol for bursary surpluses and shortfalls will remain consistent between SASS executives.
